PROJECT INTENT AND PURPOSE FOR 2009, 2010, 2011

To support ‘at risk’ young people (11-14yrs) to make positive life choices and experience a meaningful life.

In the broader community many factors can be identified as contributing to /creating a young person at risk.  We have been able to determine four primary causes:

  • a challenging family environment
  • a learning difficulty
  • challenging behaviour
  • substance dependence

These factors create low self esteem and low self control which in turn lead young people into crime or crime related activity.  This is one of the most negative and expensive outcomes for young people at risk and the community.
PCYC Bornhoffen recognizes that the Catalyst project is a crime prevention project, is core business for both PCYC and the Blue Light Association (the funding body) and a worthwhile investment.

Young people at risk of criminal and antisocial behaviour continue to attract PCYC’s attention.   Central to the project is a partnership with the Department of Education or Learning centres and Regional PCYC branches to affect positive changes for these young people and their communities.   Supporting a young person to make a positive contribution to their community and assisting in the transition into young adulthood, (further education and sustainable employment) continues to be a high priority for PCYC.

At a community level we continue to see the risk factors that contribute to a person at risk.  These risk factors erode self esteem which is at the heart of the issue.    PCYC is recognising the need to apply early intervention strategies to support not just the individual but families, groups and communities.  It follows that if a person in a family is ‘at risk’ it tends to affect the whole family.  The family becomes at risk by default and the need to support parents/guardians and not just young people are recognised.
